Chapter 21

Unforgiving Lands

The days blurred into a relentless sequence of training and preparation. Each morning brought a new set of challenges, pushing me further and demanding more of me than I thought possible. The warehouse sessions with Maddie honed our combat skills against the caged beasts, teaching us to work as a seamless unit, to anticipate and counter our adversaries.

Realistically, it gave me a view into the world of magic that I had not seen before. I learned about how mana really worked, what a skill cooldown was, and how combos worked. Fighting became more of a game of chess than anything as we threw skill combos at the monsters.

My skills improved as well and I figured out how to use my forged weapons in new ways. There were usually a couple of runes on a blade, and I got better at selectively using them for a lower mana cost. The skill also leveled up on its one as I trained more and more with it.

Two days before we left, I leveled up to level 6. There wasn’t too much fanfare, and I put another skill point into Forged Bond.

Congratulations! You have leveled up!

Runes

Vash | +2 dexterity, 5 mana

Vak | +2 stealth, 8 mana

Gurol | +3 strength, 10 mana (+1)

Zurd | +5 speed, 15 mana (+1)

I had only gotten two points, one in dexterity and one in charisma. Apparently there wasn’t much fanfare in my change from five to six, especially after how epic my level 5 transition had been.

As for the Dagger Maiden, as her class was called, Maddie was incredible. She was cheery, always smiling at me even if blood was rolling down her face, and she never gave up. I found myself drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Her prowess in battle, paired with her unyielding spirit and ever-present grin, made her not just a formidable partner but an irresistible force.

Even in the midst of chaos, with danger pressing in from all sides, her cheerfulness never waned. It was as if the thrill of the fight, the dance of danger, fueled her, making her all the more vibrant.

In the afternoons, Master Blacksmith's lessons on field forging took over. Under his meticulous guidance, I learned to harness blackstone's unique properties and adapt my forging techniques to the unpredictable conditions we might face in dwarven lands. Each session was a deep dive into what forging really was and how to harness the raw power of the elements and the refined skill of the craftsman.

Master Rogue kept giving us long, thought-out parchment notes detailing where we went wrong and how we could improve. Master Warrior sat in a few times as well, although he ignored me in most of those sessions and focused on Maddie.

The evenings were spent pouring over maps and strategizing with my partner, planning our route, anticipating the challenges we might encounter, and devising contingencies.
